Sweet Atlas Lee was born sleeping.

This session was for a family I personally know, and like so many loss stories, there is so much that happens long before the photographs are taken.

Many people don’t realize the heartbreaking journey these families walk. The unbearable news that there is no heartbeat… the waiting… sometimes days of labor and emotions no parent should ever have to carry. And then finally meeting your baby while knowing goodbye is already part of the story.

You hold them carefully because they are so fragile. You memorize every tiny detail. You love on them with everything you have… and then somehow leave the hospital with empty arms.

It is truly heartbreaking.

I have photographed many families walking through this kind of loss, and the truth is—it happens far more often than most of us realize. Every story is different. Some parents hold their baby for hours. Some cannot bring themselves to at all. Some cry so hard they can barely breathe. There is no right way to grieve.

My heart and prayers are with this family as they navigate a loss no parent should have to endure.
